A SPACE TO SLOW DOWN: DESIGNING A CALM BATHROOM

A Bathroom That Feels Like Exhale
There are certain spaces in a home that quietly ask more from us than we often realise. The bathroom is one of them. It is where we begin and end our days, where mornings slowly unfold and evenings become softer, quieter, calmer. And yet, so often it becomes a purely practical space, designed for function while forgetting the feeling it could hold.
For me, a bathroom should never feel cold or rushed. It should feel like stepping into stillness.
A place that slows you down, even if only for a few moments each day.
Creating that feeling does not always mean a complete renovation. Sometimes it begins with looking at the space differently, noticing what feels too harsh, too cluttered, or simply no longer connected to the way you want to live.

Starting With Feeling First
Before thinking about materials or furniture, I always return to one simple question: how do you want the space to feel?
One thing I often encourage is to play with your layout first, especially using digital design tools. Being able to move elements around, test different setups, and see how the space behaves visually can bring a surprising amount of clarity. A bathroom often reveals its best version not in the first idea, but after a few gentle adjustments.
And sometimes, what feels “ideal” on paper does not actually work in reality. I’ve experienced that myself.

In my own bathroom, there used to be the idea of adding an extra toilet within the space. I loved the thought of it, and for a moment it felt like the perfect addition. But when we looked at the construction and technical possibilities, it simply wasn’t feasible to create a floating toilet in that specific layout.
So I let the idea go.
And surprisingly, it turned out to be the right decision. By removing that plan, the space opened up beautifully, and it allowed the bath to take its place in a much more generous and calm way. The main toilet was just around the corner of the bathroom anyway, so practically nothing was lost , but visually and emotionally, the room gained so much more air and balance.
It reminded me again that a space does not always need everything we initially imagine for it.
Sometimes letting go of an idea creates something better than what we first had in mind.
Especially in smaller bathrooms, this becomes even more important. Not every space can hold a bath, a vanity, a shower, and extra features. And that is completely fine. A walk-in shower alone, when thoughtfully designed, can feel just as serene and luxurious.

Choosing the Larger Elements
A bath, vanity, or shower often sets the tone of the space, so I like to approach these choices slowly and with intention.
A freestanding bath brings softness and presence, especially in larger bathrooms where it can breathe freely. In smaller spaces, a built-in bath often feels more grounded and calm, blending into the architecture rather than standing apart.
Vanities work best when they feel warm and natural rather than overly polished. Wood, stone, or lime-washed finishes add depth, while floating designs can visually open up smaller rooms. And always consider storage early in the process, a calm bathroom is often one where daily essentials quietly disappear behind closed doors.

Showers, especially walk-in ones, benefit from simplicity. Think large tiles in soft tones, minimal lines, and glass that allows light to move through the space. A rainfall shower adds that slow, immersive feeling that turns a routine into a moment of pause.
Small Spaces, Quiet Luxury
Some of the most peaceful bathrooms I have seen are not large at all. They are small, but intentional.
In compact spaces, less truly becomes more. You don’t need a bath or extra styling pieces to create atmosphere. In fact, too many objects can quickly take away the calm.
Instead, focus on what is essential: a beautiful soap bottle, soft towels, a small stool if there is space, and one or two natural elements like eucalyptus or a ceramic tray. Mirrors can help reflect light and make the space feel more open, while soft, natural colours keep everything visually calm.
Even the smallest bathroom can feel like a spa when every item is chosen with care and placed with intention.

Lighting That Shapes the Mood
Lighting is often what transforms a bathroom from purely functional to truly calming.
If possible, always include dimmable lighting so the space can shift throughout the day. Bright light in the morning is useful, but softer light in the evening completely changes the feeling of the room.
Layering is key here: a main light for function, and softer side lighting or wall lights for atmosphere. Candlelight adds another layer of warmth and stillness, especially when combined with subtle scents like sticks or natural fragrance.
It is often the combination of these gentle light sources that creates that spa-like feeling, even in the simplest bathroom.
Styling With Natural Calm
Styling is never about filling space, but about softening it.
Natural materials bring that quiet sense of ease instantly, linen towels, wood, stone, ceramics, woven baskets, and beautiful art on the wall. They don’t need to match perfectly; they just need to feel honest and connected to nature.

I often recommend keeping surfaces intentionally simple. Not empty, but uncluttered. A small tray with a candle, a scent, and one or two objects is often enough. It creates a focal point without overwhelming the room.
These small details are what turn a bathroom into a space you don’t just use, but actually feel in.
A Space That Grows With You
A calm bathroom is never about perfection or completion. It is about allowing the space to evolve slowly with you, adjusting when something no longer feels right, and trusting that clarity often comes through small changes rather than big gestures.
Sometimes it is a shift in layout. Sometimes it is removing rather than adding. And sometimes it is simply allowing yourself to see the space with fresh eyes.

A Fresh Pair of Eyes
If your bathroom no longer feels calm, or if you are unsure how to bring more softness into it, I love helping to look at spaces in a new way.
Together we can explore layouts, materials, and subtle changes that make the space feel more balanced and natural again. Always in a way that works with what is already there, and grows gently into something more aligned with how you want to live.
You are always welcome to reach out if you feel ready to create a bathroom that feels calmer, warmer, and truly your own.
With love,
