May I Be Pampered, Please?
By Dagmar – tea-sipper, flower-sniffer, and proud mama of boys-now-men.
Hello lovely readers,
Ah, May — the month when gardens bloom, birds serenade, and the calendar gives us a gentle nudge: “Hey… don’t forget the moms.”
So here I am, raising a cup of lukewarm tea (you know the kind — you made it, then forgot it), to every mother out there. Whether your home is filled with sticky fingers and toddler giggles, the sounds of grown-up kids calling home, or the quiet ache of a child you miss deeply — this day is for you.
Let’s Talk Gifts — Big, Small, or Picked from a Field
Mother’s Day gifts don’t need to be shiny or expensive (though I will never say no to a sparkly vintage brooch). In fact, the most heart-melting ones often come from the hands, hearts, and creative chaos of our children — no matter their age.
The Little Ones
For the mamas deep in the diaper years, or with kids who still ask you how to spell “MOM” — I see you. There’s magic in those handpicked dandelion bouquets, the macaroni necklaces, and the
“I wuv you” cards written in bubble letters. Frame those scribbles! Put that wildflower bundle in your favorite chipped mug. And let someone else — please — pour your coffee.
The Grown-Up Kids
If your children are now towering over you (or just paying their own phone bill), encourage them gently: “No, you don’t need to buy me a spa day. Just bring me a bag of black licorice, a walk around the park, or that plate you think I’ll love.”
A Special Whisper for the Mothers Who Grieve
If you’ve lost a child — recently or long ago — know this: you are still and forever a mother.
Your love didn’t end. Your story didn’t stop. It simply became something invisible and sacred, held gently in the deepest folds of your heart.
Don’t feel the need to hide your tears or tuck your ache away. Let yourself feel it all — and still, please, celebrate yourself.
You are a mother. The world may not always see it… but I do. We do.
And on this day — your day — we honor you. With tenderness.
And if You Still Can…
If your own mom is still here — nearby or just a phone call away — don’t wait. Visit her. Hug her. Let her know she’s still needed. Still appreciated. Still very much loved.
Even a little pampering can go a long way. Because while we become mothers ourselves… we never stop being someone’s child. Spoil her with something simple and special: a framed copy of that childhood finger painting she never could throw out, or a little handwritten note. (Yes, pen and paper still exist.)
Thrifty, Thoughtful, and Totally Us
Here are some favorite Mother's Day gift ideas that work for all stages of motherhood:
Wildflowers — picked from a field, the sidewalk, or your own garden
Kid art in vintage frames — even if that “kid” is now 32
A handmade breakfast — burnt toast is still love
Secondhand treasures — like a teacup with personality or a vase with a past
Rest, actual rest — feet up, face masked, door closed (just for a little while)
And of course: Time. Presence. A hug that lasts longer than three seconds. That’s the good stuff.
A Little Tip from This Mama
Tell your kids what you love — not with a megaphone, but in the cozy way we moms do. Share your stories. Point out the books you like in that thrift store. Mention that you’ve always wanted to try lavender honey or just love the seaglass earrings you saw a while back. Let them know that sometimes, just hearing “You’re amazing, Mom” is all we need.
So Let May Be for Mothers
Because no matter how old we get or how much our families grow or change — a mother is always a mother. We show up. We hold hearts. We hold memories. We carry so much.
And on this day — we deserve to be carried, just a little. In gestures, in laughter, in the quiet joy of being seen and loved.
So to all the moms — new, seasoned, grieving, joyful, exhausted, or wonderfully all of the above — I send you: Wildflowers. Warm hugs. And one gloriously pampered day.
With love
Dagmar
