A Bowerbird at Heart

Updated: Mar 10

My Love for Collecting Nature’s Treasures

There’s something enchanting about walking along a beach or through the woods and spotting little treasures that nature has left behind. For me, it’s like finding hidden gems, whether it’s a smooth piece of sea glass, a perfectly weathered branch, or even the tiniest shell. These natural finds are more than just objects—they’re stories, whispers from the world outside, and I can’t resist bringing them home with me. In many ways, I guess you could say I’m a bit of a bowerbird at heart, always on the lookout for something shiny, unique, or just downright beautiful to incorporate into my life.

Beachcombing for Magic

One of my favorite places to gather nature’s offerings is the beach. The rhythmic sound of the waves, the salty air, and the sand between my toes—it's pure magic. While walking, I keep my eyes peeled for sea glass, driftwood, and pebbles shaped by the ocean. Even a cockatoo feather can make my day and will end up in a glass frame. Each piece has a story of its own, shaped by time, water, and wind. The soft blues, greens, and frosty whites of sea glass make for wonderful décor accents, and I love displaying them in jars or even using them as part of a DIY project. Driftwood, with its soft, weathered tones, often finds its way into my home as a statement piece on a shelf or incorporated into a hanging art display.

Woodland Wonders

My love for nature’s treasures doesn’t stop at the shoreline. In the woods, I find an entirely different kind of beauty. Twisted branches, pinecones, and leaves in every shade of green and brown spark my creativity. Branches, for example, are one of my favorite things to work with. Their organic shapes bring a sense of wildness and authenticity to any room, and I often incorporate them into my décor—either left bare or intertwined with twinkling lights during the winter months. I also love the texture of pinecones in bowls or vases, adding a natural touch that feels grounded and earthy.

Collecting as an Art

I’ve realized over time that my love for collecting these natural treasures has made me a bit like a bowerbird, always attracted to the beautiful and unique. Just like the bird who builds an intricate nest filled with bright, shiny objects to attract a mate, I too am drawn to nature’s offerings and love incorporating them into my home. The thrill is in the hunt, the joy in finding something that speaks to you. I bring them home not because they’re valuable in the traditional sense, but because they have meaning to me. Each piece tells a story of a walk I took, a place I visited, or a quiet moment spent outdoors.

Bringing Nature Indoors

For those of you who also feel the pull of nature, I encourage you to let your heart guide you on your own treasure hunts. Next time you’re on a walk, take a moment to really look around you. Pick up a piece of driftwood, gather a handful of pebbles, or collect a few fallen leaves. Nature offers us so much beauty if we take the time to notice it. And the best part? These treasures don’t just serve as décor; they bring with them the calming, grounding energy of the outdoors.

A Bowerbird’s Tip: Use What You Find

One of my favorite ways to use these natural finds is to simply display them as they are, letting their raw beauty shine. A single branch can make a stunning centerpiece when placed in a tall vase. Sea glass can be scattered across a windowsill or added to a decorative bowl. Pinecones can be grouped together in baskets or even turned into holiday ornaments. The key is to keep things simple and let nature’s textures and colors speak for themselves.

Incorporating Nature’s Treasures Into Your Home

As you start your own collection, remember that it’s about creating a space that feels personal and connected to the world around you. I often store my finds in pretty jars or baskets until inspiration strikes. Sometimes, I’ll rearrange them depending on the season—branches and pinecones in the winter, sea glass and shells in the summer. It’s a simple, cost-effective way to bring the outdoors inside, adding warmth and personality to your home.

So, if you’re like me, a bowerbird at heart, I encourage you to embrace it! Let nature inspire you, collect with intention, and create a home that reflects your love for the world around you. After all, there’s beauty in the simplest things, if only we take the time to look.

Happy hunting, fellow bowerbirds!
